Exhibition Shelter City Maastricht

Portraits of human rights defenders

Maastricht University – Faculty of Law
Bouillonstraat 1 – 3

"These fierce and powerful people have touched my heart”. Look through the eyes of photographer Daniella van Bergen and learn about the exceptional people who stand up against violations of rights and freedoms from around the world. Because of their work, human rights defenders are often subject to harassment and threats. Through the Shelter City programme, human rights defenders can temporarily relocate to Maastricht and nine other Dutch Shelter Cities for up to three months, where they can re-energise, gain new knowledge, and access opportunities to expand their network.

The photo exhibition will be open from 9 – 25 January 2018.

Shelter City Maastricht

Maastricht became a Shelter City for human rights defenders in 2014. Since then, the city has supported six human rights defenders from Somaliland, Palestine, Thailand, Kenya, Burundi, and Nigeria. In the exhibition, three of these human rights defenders are featured, including Richard and Nigerian LGBTI rights defender, Judith [see picture).

“Daniella [photographer] shows these brave faces of human rights defenders. These photos tell their story, you can feel it. I hope this exhibition will open people’s eyes.” – Mayor Penn-te Strake
